Omkaradatta's quotes

Words and language

Omkaradatta's picture

Words/concepts are dualistic, and do not bring us together. Although serving as a reason for physical togetherness, words either are neutral or they separate us. True communion is found only in Silence.

— Omkaradatta

Be like the chick

Omkaradatta's picture

Be like the chick that pecks at the shell. Speculating about life outside the shell would have been of little use to it, but pecking at the shell breaks the shell from within and liberates the chick. Similarly, break the mind from within by investigation and exposure of its contradictions and absurdities.

— Nisargadatta Maharaj

About acceptance

Omkaradatta's picture

If you look at yourself in your moments of pleasure or pain, you will invariably find that it is not the thing in itself that is pleasant or painful, but the situation of which it is a part. Pleasure lies in the relationship between the enjoyer and the enjoyed. And the essence of it is acceptance. Whatever may be the situation, if it is acceptable, it is pleasant. If it is not acceptable, it is painful. What makes it acceptable is not important; the cause may be physical, or psychological, or untraceable; acceptance is the decisive factor. Obversely, suffering is due to nonacceptance.

— Nisargadatta Maharaj

The Source is within

Omkaradatta's picture

By its very nature the mind is outward-turned; it always tends to seek for the source of things among the things themselves. To be told to look for the source within, is, in a way, the beginning of a new life.

— Nisargadatta Maharaj

Inspiration and reason

Omkaradatta's picture

Reason is the rough tool to do the hard work; inspiration is the bright light which shows us all truth.

— Swami Vivekananda

Knowing you're 'awake'

Omkaradatta's picture

How do you know you're awake? When everything sings of this spiritual victory. Music sings of it, the trees sing of it, the sky sings, the grass sings, even the Earth itself sings of this freedom.

— Omkaradatta

God is within

Omkaradatta's picture

God is within, and He is gentle and good, peaceful and silent. Approach Him naked and alone, empty and open and available.

— Omkaradatta

To give up suffering

Omkaradatta's picture

No one else can feel your pain -- in that, you are alone. But everyone else can feel your joy, everyone can share your peace. To give up suffering is not to become inhuman, but to join the human race.

— Omkaradatta

Unlearn nonacceptance

Omkaradatta's picture

I am not saying to accept anything; you need not learn acceptance. You need only un-learn non-acceptance. Stop struggling; be still. Be what you are. Abandon the ghosts of the past and spectres of the future. Leave the phantoms for the dead.

— Omkaradatta

Learning from children

Omkaradatta's picture

It would be more interesting to learn from children, than try to teach them how to behave, how to live and how to function.

— U.G. Krishnamurti
