People often see just two options -- attachment and rejection. The third option, detachment, is often missed by the mind, which tends to think dualistically. Letting go is the answer.

Yup, same as ego. It's neither embraced nor rejected, interest is just withdrawn. It seems to exist only because there is an interest in it. Attachments exist only because of interest, either interest in something or in removing the attachment to something; both of which maintain the attachment.
