Learn to listen without distortion and learn to look without imagination.

As we all know, listening

As we all know, listening without distortion and looking without imagination is not a matter of just deciding or learning. It requires the heavy usage of certain techniques to counter this habitual functioning of the mind.

Hence, instructing people just to learn this (or other Do's popular with certain spiritual teachers) just makes people more frustrated as it is futile.

Awareness is enough

I'm guessing the author's, by saying this is creating awareness of how the habitual mind distorts what we hear and how we see.
Once there is awareness of the mind's functioning ways, nothing need really be done. Awareness is enough. All else happens spontaneously.
