Biography

Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi was born on March 21, 1923 to a Christian family in Chindawara, India.

Her parents were Prasad and Cornelia Salve, said to be direct descendants of the royal Shalivahana dynasty. They called their child Nirmala, which means 'Immaculate'.

She claimed she was born with an understanding of the human nervous system and its energetic counterparts and that in order to become acquainted with the scientific vocabulary attached to these subjects, she decided to study medicine and psychology at the Christian Medical College in Lahore.

Shortly before India achieved independence she married Sir. C.P. Srivastava, one of India's most dedicated civil servant officers, who was knighted by the Queen of England.

In 1970, she visited a meditation camp in Nargol that was presided over by Rajneesh (later known as Osho). She thought that he was looting people under the guise of spirituality and said he was mesmerizing people. The camp ran from 2 May to 5 May 1970, and Rajneesh led sessions in an early form of dynamic meditation, discoursed on kundalini and other matters, and answered a question about sahaja yoga.

She said that while in Nargol, on May 5, 1970, she witnessed the rising of Kundalini. She stated that the potential for all humanity to gain spiritual self-awareness was realized at this time, which she characterizes as a "historical process of en-masse self-realization and inner transformation". Soon after she founded Sahaja Yoga in Mumbai.

Since 1970, she kept a busy schedule, travelling around the world to teach the techniques of Sahaja Yoga meditation. She claimed she had the capacity to trigger the awakening of the spiritual power in human beings (Kundalini) at an "en masse" level.

Teachings

Sahaja Yoga

Sahaja Yoga is the religious movement founded by Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi. The movement says that Sahaja Yoga is a process of Kundalini awakening which produces self realization and results in an experience of thoughtless awareness or mental silence (Nirvichar Samadhi).

It is said that people experimenting with Sahaja Yoga reported the experiencing of a cool breeze on their hands and on top of their head. Other sensations include a dilation of the pupils and deep physical relaxation.

Sahaja Yoga started in India and England (where Nirmala Srivastava moved to in 1974) and there are now Sahaja Yoga centers in almost 100 countries worldwide. The Sahaja Yoga organization is known as Vishwa Nirmala Dharma (Universal Pure Religion) or Sahaja Yoga International.

Meta Modern Era

by Her Holiness Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi Srivastava

(Hardcover)

The most difficult part is to convince a human being that in the entire creation [...] he is capable of becoming a glorious personality, a beautiful, peaceful angel." -- Meta Modern Era, Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi.

"Meta Modern Era" is a unique book about spirituality and the modern times written by H.H. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, recognized worldwide as one of the greatest spiritual teachers of our times. Learn about Self Realization, which is now possible effortlessly and en-masse through Sahaja Yoga, in this unique book which sets the premises for the paradigm shift of the 21st century: a tangible breakthrough in human awareness.

The book contains the following chapters:

1. Modernism and Rationality

A profound perspective on the causes of the problems of modern times, predicted and described as the "dark age" (Kali Yuga). A vivid and critical look at our times where technological development lacking the knowledge of the roots of our Being has lead to a deep and desperate quest for the absolute truth in our hearts and minds. The limits of mere rationality can lead to disastrous conclusions and theories which are justified by the ego instead of being enlightened by the Spirit. Their effects can be seen in arts, social trends, and in all the manifestations of our society.

2. Choices

The root of consumerism can be found in the traps of choices and fashions set by entrepreneurs for the modern minds. This chapter exposes the subtle causes of materialism and its implications on family life, and how a realized soul (person who has achieved Self Realization) can go beyond them.

3. Democracy

Communism is dead. Nazism is no more. Why have the modern democracies become 'demonocracies'? Money orientation versus power orientation. Where can the question "what's wrong?" lead. Real freedom is not abandonment to one's habits and instincts, but the freedom to enjoy one's Spirit which becomes a reality after Self Realization.

4. Racialism

A fresh look at this widespread conditioning of our society, and how it can be replaced by a culture of true integration, coming from the heart, in the light of one's Spirit.

5. The Culture in the West

"Culture shows the social heights in serenity, wisdom and morality". Culture directs social trends. The culture of vulgarity justified by sheer rationality is contrasted with the subtle culture of innocence which expresses the beauty and purity of the Spirit.

6. Religions

All religions were started in a pure form by great prophets and incarnations, but due to the people "in charge", deviated over time from the absolute Truth into ritualism and fundamentalism. Their common essence and integration can be found - not mentally, but by experiencing the connection with one's Spirit (Self Realization) which is beyond the mind. "The prayer said without connection (Yoga) with God is like a telephone without connection".

The true religion is within. It can be awakened and manifested in our lives through the process of Self Realization. "With Sahaja Yoga, the innate universal religion of Divine Love is enlightened within and the seeker becomes spontaneously truly religious, righteous, moral, peaceful, compassionate and a powerful, enlightened personality."

7. Peace

A humorous look at human ego and its stunning manifestations in our modern times, and how on the subtle side it ends up destroying our peace within. Peace cannot be achieved through lectures or political changes, but has to be established in the individual, and Sahaja Yoga makes this possible through Kundalini awakening. "The human mind is always bombarded with thoughts. It builds the ego and reacts with it. [...] These thoughts come from the past or from the future, but reality is in the present where we achieve peace." Self Realization leads to collective consciousness which is not a concept, but a higher state of awareness in which one becomes part of the whole and acts spontaneously to help others.

8. World Peace

All wars have caused a reversal of our value system, which is reflected in our family life. "It is not an investment in armaments which will secure a truly peaceful future. It is the investment in our children which will yield invaluable dividends in the shape of a peaceful and moral society in the near future."

A sweet but profound look at raising our children in a loving, disciplined and spiritual way, developing all the beautiful qualities which are built-in within them. How to avoid their exposure to cultural agressions that play on their curiosity and attack their innocence. How to build a culture of universal spirituality for our children, preventing them from falling into the terrible problems caused by religious fundamentalism.

9. Evolution

A breathtaking view of the evolution of life that lead in an accelerated spiral to the human stage, paralelled by the evolution of awareness. Seeking the truth is part of this living process, and Self Realization is the next step in human evolution. The opening of the Sahasrara (seventh center) at the cosmic level in 1970 and the birth of Sahaja Yoga.

10. Message of Meta Science

Limits of science and the message of Sahaja Yoga which is the meta science of our modern times, bridging the gap between science and spirituality. A scientific exposition of the evolution of matter and awareness to the human level and beyond.

11. The Subtle System

A description of the three channels of energy and seven chakras and the role they play in our being and life, as well as the transformation that takes place through the awakening of the Kundalini.

Why this confused obsession about Mataji?

Why are you so obsessed with her that you happen to post everywhere irrelevant issues (e.g. whether she ate or didn't eat meat) and baseless arguments about Osho or not Osho? These are naturally not things that suppose to cause someone to be obsessed.

hugo, I have posted several

hugo,

I have posted several other facts, but it looks like you are only obsessed with Osho thing. Anyway, what is wrong in listening to Osho ?

Here is what Osho had said about Mataji

One of my disciples, Nirmala Srivastava, has now become a great spiritual leader. Now her name is long: Her Holiness Jagatjanani – ”The mother of the whole world” – Mataji Nirmalaji Srivastavaji.

She was once traveling with me in a car, and I passed by Muktananda’s ashram. The people staying in Muktananda’s ashram invited me to be there for a five-minute stay, just to take a cup of tea. And it was a long journey so I said, “There is no harm in it.” Anyway I love a cup of tea! So I stayed for five minutes.

Nirmala saw Muktananda. She could not believe that this stupid-looking man – disgusting, more or less a buffoon – had become a great spiritual leader.

Entry Easy

Yes, joining in the Sahaja Yoga is very, very easy but to remain in the centre is necessary for to be progressive in this method of spirituality. This cente means the balance in sahaj ayoga. Majority of the people either leftists or rightists. Left is the left side sympathetic nervous system and right is the right side nervous system which expresses our mode of living and the state of our minds. We breath through the right nostril or left but rare are chances when we breath equal, balancing breath from the both nostril at one time and the way we remain either as left or right. Left pertains to Eerhaa naadi and rigt is Pingla naadi but we have to be in centre which is called Sushmnaa and this Centre, Sushmnaa is called Para-sympathetic nervous system(Central nervous system) wherein sahajis to have to be and to remain here as ideal and someone is already is here then it is very difficult to maintain its balanced status; therefore, it is said entry is easy but remain in sahaja yoga is difficult.

Thanks for sharing this. We must keep observing the breathe every time. There are many things that balances this.

Yes, Osho is extremely dangerous. He may kill the personality in you, he may cause you to evolve in a way which is extremely dangerous for the control of mind.

I'm confused - in one place you denounce Mataji for criticizing Osho and here you denounce Osho because he was criticized by Mataji, decide whom you stand with.

Can't disciple avoid being Judases?

I have done a research and found out that she was a disciple of Osho.I have even participated in sahaja Yoga functions. She is just imparting on you a small fragment of Osho's meditation.

Alas it will soon be over
Can we make it last forever?
Atleast for now don't betray me.
Man is only coward
Can't disciple avoid being Judases?
When it is Over you can stop
So good.............Alleluia!

Osho

PS:I have chosen this particular lines of Osho on response to your article where you have mentioned Sahaja yoga community performed a reserch and where osho was declared as Raksha in terta yug and he carried negative vibes...I could not believe that such words for master can ever come from a disciple.I am not saying that disciple should cling on to the master ,at some point he/she should let master go but being ungrateful to the master is simply indigestable....

Fully wrong

Your research is found fully wrong after the observations of records of Sahaja Yoga. In view of it I hereby quoting from the book called 'THE FACE OF GOD' as below---
"When She was visiting Her brother in Jabalpur, a Professor of philosophy, called Rajneesh, saw Her and prostrated before Her, praising her as Adi Shakti. But Shri Mataji did not wish to reveal Her self as a Divine incarnation yet.
When he learnt that Her husband was the Chairman of Shipping Corporation, Rajneesh tried to win many favours through him for his many business friends. He kept pursuing Her to see his work, even assuring Her that it would meet with Her endorsement. She eventually consented to visit his seminar in Nargol, near Bombay on May 4, 1970. She was so shocked to see him looting people under the guise of spirituality, that She was completely disgusted."

She promotes eating Non Vegetarian

kasper's picture

I was a staunch supporter of Sahaja Yoga movement and practised it for two years and nothing happened - except cold and hot feeling in palms.

hugo's picture

So what?

She is not a vegetarian, so what? Some of the greatest spiritual and religious figures I came across were not vegetarian. She was born Christian, not Jain.

Osho was not her guru or master, she has just attended his camp back in 1970 and was uncomfortable with his methods and nature as a guru.

so what is not an answer

She was not an uneducated person. A lamb has to be killed to satisfy her tongue.

Are you not veg ? If I had given a knife to Nirmal to kill a lamb to in front of her eyes and the skin of the lamb is to be removed by her she would not do that. But she conveniently allows animals to be killed to clean up left handedness or right handedness.

There are ample proofs that she was Osho's disciples. Osho himself said that she was her disciple.

You confuse between your

You confuse between your inherited cultural habits (eating or not eating meat) and evaluation of a spiritual master. As I wrote you before, these have nothing to do with each other. Most of the great spiritual masters ate meat. Look at things beyond your cultural conditioning (and beyond your obsession with her) and find out why you are so obsessed.

PS. and repeating like a robot that she was a disciple of Osho is not a proven formula to turn something into truth. She only attended one of his seminars in the 70s as the video you mention elsewhere shows indeed.

I appreciate your comments

I appreciate your comments and reply.

While I agree that eating or not eating meat has nothing to do with evolution of spiritual master, I have to take a different stand for Sahaj Yoga. I do not think any master recommended eating meat as a a way to solve some of the problems. This is unlike Sahaj Yoga where eating meat is recommended as a way to get rid of the "too cold" type of people. And this is where I differ. I think that there are methods to solve this problem that does not require killing animals.

As for Osho disciple thing, I will quote directly what Osho said -

One of my disciples, Nirmala Srivastava, has now become a great spiritual leader. Now her name is long: Her Holiness Jagatjanani – ”The mother of the whole world” – Mataji Nirmalaji Srivastavaji. She was once traveling with me in a car, and I passed by Muktananda’s ashram.

It does not look like a one time visit. All indications are pointing her to be a disciple of Osho and she visited his Ashram for two years.

But I respect your obsession to not entertain any thing that is hurts your feelings.
