Radha Ma was born in Hyderabad and later moved to Bangalore where she got married and according to some accounts may have been working in accounting (some even claim that she was a chartered accountant).

At some point, she decided to renounce the worldly life. For some time she conducted a life of a female sadhu, sleeping in the streets while moving from Bangalore to the area of Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu, the city of Ramana Maharshi, at the foot of the sacred Arunachala Hill, where she remained until her death.

Soon, devotees began to be attracted to her and urged her to move from the streets to a house that was rented for her. Her husband himself became one of her devotees.

Radha Ma lived during her recent years in a house together with a very few selected three sannyasins, one of them her husband. The house is located off the Pradakshina road on the Northwest side of the Arunachala Hill near the Sparsa resort.

She has also purchased a land on the south edge of Lake Samudra and was planning to build there five cottages for devotees and a large prayer / meditation hall but the plan has never been materialized.

She used to claim that she was born in that "state" that she is in, and has always been in it. In the same way, she sometimes denied it as, for example, in her facebook post a few weeks before her death.

Until 2009, Radha Ma used to give occasional satsangs at Sri Kannappa Temple on the Prodakshana road during the season (late September-March). In 2010 Radha gave no public satsangs. In 2011 she gave one last satsang in January 25.

In early Ocober 2009, Radha Ma conveyed a special message phrased as a poem to be published exclusively on GurusFeet.com. Later, she personally responded to users' comments there.

Over the years, rumors as well as testimonies by past devotees spread that Radha Ma has been occasionally involved with black magic (Sidhis).

On the night of March 5, 2011, Radha Ma poured kerosene onto herself and set herself on fire in her residence in what seems to be an act of self immolation. She was rushed to a hospital by her sannyasins with 90% burns and died there the day after at 15:15 on March 6, 2011.

Her body was not cremated since she was a sannyasin. She was interred into a samadhi on March 7, 2011, at her residence.

The tragic act came after some controversial cases she was presumably involved in that had taken place the months before.

Radha teached pure Advaita in a charming and friendly manner.

In September 2009, Radha Ma has graciously conveyed the following special message to be published exclusively on GurusFeet.com. The message was directed to the many seekers who were wishing to meet her:

I am like a bird
I only fly away
I don't know where my home is
I don't know where my soul is
Baby, don't waste time to meet me
I am like a bird...

Blueprints for Awakening: Wisdom of the Masters

by John David (formerly Premananda)

Blueprints for Awakening is for everyone who has an inner passion to know who they are and what they are doing here as a human being. It is for all who ask the question \'Who am I?\' and for those who are looking for guidance on the teaching of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi to \'be as you are\'.

This unique film presents fresh, modern dialogues with 16 Indian masters about ancient truth. John David s familiarity with this subject, combined with his many years of experience guiding spiritual seekers, create fascinating, lively interactions with each of the Masters. The questions relate to major topics which we meet on the spiritual journey, such as Enlightenment, Self-enquiry, the Nature of the Mind and the World, Guru and Devotion.

Radha Ma - rumors about a disputable persona

silencio's picture

Now after Radha Ma's sensational death this week, stories start to leak out that shed a light on somewhat a disputable persona.

alan jacobs's picture

Radha Ma

alan jacobs

Contrary to these slanders possibly started by unscrupulous persons who bore some kind of grudge because she had refused to see them again, deeming them to be insincere aspirants, this is my take on the whole affair.

This is a tale which will run and run- everyone in Tiru who knew her, has a different take on it. The Sanyasins in her Monastery probably know the Truth but they are keeping silent about the whole affair at present. I knew her well, over 8 years, and she was always full of love and compassion with those who understood what she had to offer and who truly loved her in return.

She was highly respected by The Ashram authorities and Yogi Ram Sat Kumar called her his spiritual daughter.I felt she had powers, and I felt the pure love and peace in her Presence. Any advice she gave on Sadhana proved to be true in practice- and it was the information you don't find in books. She had many hundreds of friends on Face Book.

There is a report that she had been diagnosed with the deadly incurable cancer of the pancreas which could account for her wish to leave the body.

Her own book Advaita Ratnas can be ordered from Samata Books on line. Then you can read her teachings and judge for yourself. She loved Bhagavan, Ramakrishna , Shankara and Sarada. A truly Great Being has been called to leave the planet. Her influence on those who love her and whom she loved will no doubt be felt more powerfully.

I expect her ordeal by fire will become another Arunachala Legend.

alan jacobs | Sat, 03/12/2011 - 06:37
silencio's picture

legend is when there are no facts

If things are so pastoral and ideal than how the vindictive letter she left fits into this ideal?

And that which several servants saw happening in that house over the years?

And the issue with the lands that happened not with one devotee but with several different ones?

And the large sums of money loaned and never returned?

And her time at Sparsa?

And the climbing on the fence between her house and that of her neighbor and the harassment?

And her trying to chase ex-devotees to beg them to meet her, events seen in several places in Tiru?

These are not just rumors. I and my wife heard so many complaints and personal stories firsthand over the years.

I read the books and attended her satsangs a few years ago and she was indeed helpful but this is irrelevant to the underlying riddle. Any wise and learned teacher of Advaita can be helpful.

Hi maryjo, I find it

Hi maryjo, I find it difficult to write the details I heard so soon after her death and given the fact that I don't know 100% what of them is true or not, plus, I assume there are sensitivities now with the disciples and sanyasins. You can see some of the details in the links i posted above.

Silencio and Sri Sri Kevinandiji

Silencio is getting all his information from a group of about 2 or 3 associated with the great and magnificent Sri Sri Kevinandji. And Silencio will propagate this nonsense because it would require too much effort to actually find out the truth for himself. Taking information from others is way easier. It's a shame how immature in mind and heart so many seekers truly are. Why do you people even bother with Truth? Just go have fun and enjoy life. This world is filled with so many beautiful things to enjoy. Truth isn't for you. You will die long before you even have the chance to comprehend what it is you're even looking for.

Radha Ma

So it is a group of 3-4 disgruntled persons who are talking so ill about a dead spiritual person who touched so many lives. I don't want to think what will happen to them when Arunachala straightens them out. I don't even want to think about it.

Maryjo | Sun, 03/13/2011 - 09:46
doo's picture

No smoke without fire

It's not 3-4 persons and I don't think it has anything to do with being disgruntled, and above all I think Arunachala has better things to do than "straighten people" at our command or wish.

There is far more to this. There are also very old cases that popped up recently. The police is involved for quite a while and the facts will start to pour out with time. I suggest therefore that meanwhile, so long as anything is speculations based on wishful thinking of both friends and foes of Radha Ma, we will all leave these issues aside. It doesn't do any good to anyone, not to Radha, not to her sanyasinns, not to devotees and not to past devotees.

Hey Newbie,

Don't misinterpret my words. I didn't 'wish' Arunachala would straighten out anyone. I KNOW he does. If you reside in a power spot like Tiruvannamalai and are indulging in anything but serious sadhana, watch it. And that goes for her friends and foes of Radha Ma.

It is mind boggling that so many westerners couldn't make it in the world. They are now in Tiruvannamalai calling themselves advaitins but really creating trouble. Losers, in my opinion. Come back home and give life a try again.

Dear B-friend,

I suggest that you calm down. I don't know who Sri Sri Kevinandji is and I don't know any devotees or associates. But I do know that projection, aggression and mainly denial are not the best methods to seek truth.

Anyway, I don't judge you. I know how difficult it may be when everything seems to collapse.

oy oy yoy

Think of me what you will Silencio..And throw whatever psychobabble you can at me to make yourself feel better, but nothing that comes out about, or is said of Ma, could ever change my views of her. My views are entirely personal and have nothing to do with what goes on in Tiru, or has been staged for Ma, or with what goes on in the IMAGINATIONS of those who think they knew her.

The facts we are dealing with is the fact you shared a link full of nonsense about Radha Ma without even knowing who was spewing it or why. This is fact.

Now why would you do this?

Another fact is that you wrongly assume I am led around by what you consider are the right virtues to know truth. I'm not one of the blissful love-n-light crowd and have been thoroughly exorcised of any egoic disposition that considers itself virtuous.

I'm sorry you feel judged, you are not. That is nonsense to me. And if anything was too abrasive for you, maybe one day you will be able to comprehend why.

Silenso, you wrote: "These are not just rumors. I and my wife heard so many complaints and personal stories firsthand over the years."

You heard one side of a story and didn't bother to find out the other side. It takes two hands to clap.

In my view, you have missed the whole point of living in Tiru -- developing discrimination or critical thinking? Did you and your wife not wonder what motives these people had to complain and spread stories about a saintly woman.

Maryjo | Tue, 03/15/2011 - 10:29
silencio's picture

Stop using me to serve your denial of truth!

On what do you base that I heard one side of the story? On what do you base that I didn't bother to find out the other side? How dare you use me to guard yourself from news that are not convenient to you?

You don't know me so stop using me as a convenient image in your imagination to serve your mental purposes of denial. Leave me aside and deal with your shielded refusal beforehand to allow any chance, only a chance, for inconvenient truth to enter your system. I don't know if Radha did all these things that are for years being in courts in Bangalore (and this is not a rumor), I don't know if she exploited her devotees financially, I don't know if she abused mentally and in other ways her sanyasins, I don't know if she harassed her neighbor and so on - but as opposed to you, I am honest enough with myself to be open to check these things so that my love to Radha will be based on me being exposed to the facts and all views and not on blocking myself hermetically to anything which I don't want to hear.

I respect grief and love that finds it so hard to discover even a possibility that the loved one may have been different than what we used to think, even a possibility. But I cannot respect denial that fights any disclosure of any data in order to derive into a learned and based conclusion.

Don't you see that what you do is not discrimination but "wishful discrimination"? - You are violently discriminating whatever seems even vaguely that you would not like, that has even the slightest possibility to shatter your imagined world.

And finally regarding Tiru and Arunachala - as well as you apparently by what you wrote misunderstand the great function of Arunachala, imagining it to be some religious superficial, even moral, force, you seem to build an ideology of "whole point living in tiru" - I know too many who live in Tiru, though many of them are dear to me, most of them caught the infectious mind disease of feudal criticism (not to be confused with "critical thinking") shrinking in rage to see new teachers, fresh and more vital new seekers, feeling unconsciously that these impudent novices instead of waiting in the line come and steal Tiruvannamalai from us, hey, we live here - how dare these juniors even aspire to get beyond where we are.

silencio | Tue, 03/15/2011 - 11:22

return volley

Silencio..We are missing the entire point here. If I knew you in the same manner as I knew Radha Ma, and I came across someone speaking horrible things about you right after your death that might find their way to the friends, family, little children, perhaps even devotees, and others that cared very deeply for you, or even if they didn't, I would speak up for you as well. To spread rumor and filth, true or not, right after the death of someone is very low. I do have the capacity to understand where you "might" be trying to come from but your timing, to put it bluntly, is disgusting. Did even a week pass? It is that simple Silencio.

If you were so privy to these things of Ma and were genuinely concerned about seekers, why wait until Radha Ma has passed? It is apparent the interest in the gossip exceeds the interest for the seeker.

But so what.

You said what you said and I've said what I've said.

And as far as the psychobabble and denial...try harder. I'm sure I can be put in my place but it won't be with that stuff.

What a waste of human resource to the West for them to give up on life and move to Tiruvannamalai. Come back home and contribute to the economy. It could use your help. You still avoids the simple question

According to what I read here and in other places in recent days and according to what I hear from many different people in Tiru, the people that you refer to as "these people" (which appear not to be a group or even in some cases to know each other) are not bad mouthing but just mouthing what some few others try forcibly and hopelessly to conceal.

And again you repeat the use of that mysterious name "Sri Sri Kevinandiji" and deliberately ignores the question who the hell he/she is (no one ever heard about such an entity with such a name before) - a fact that in my view seems to strengthen happy together's observation that it is just an imaginary invention to portray as if there is a formal diabolic group of people that submits to a leader that all they care to do is spread false facts about Radha Ma which is absurd. If this is not the case, elaborate in a factual way who is this sri sri that you use his/her name so often. Otherwise, sorry, I simply don't believe you.

And the Silencio I'm referring to is the one who helped to propagate slander against Radha Ma, however unwittingly, by sharing the links above. And as far as this nonsense goes...

"I still do...n't know how it happened but from experience with her I guess as usual she was trying to show that she is beyond death & that she has powers "sidhis", but this time is went in a total unexpected way & the fire ate her to death. As b4 she used to burn herself with hot metal or pierce her body with needles or cut it with knives etc to confirm that she is beyond all of this...Most of the people I know whom knew feel shocked but happy at the same time because they think it is a relieve for her students.

It is the furthest from truth that she did it on purpose in the name of self-immolation as she is so attached to her students."

The imagination of this guy is truly amazing.

Ma was well aware she would be leaving soon. Her death had nothing to do with trying to "prove her powers". I don't know who all she hinted to or made aware of her "quitting of the body", but this was spoken by her a little over a month prior.

"I may take rest permanently from anything but not from you ______..always available to you." - February 2, 2011

These are not words of a black magician hinting about their grand plans to prove to the world they are invincible. These are beautiful, simple, and humble words from someone who cared to make sure to another that things will be "okay" when they're gone.

The self immolation of the body is only another lesson to those about what they are not. Ma, to me, instantly reminded me of the Heyoka's of the Native American traditions. A true Sacred Clown. I know for certain she will always be my "Singing Clown" no matter how crazy the things are that come out about her "actions".
