Biography
Dr. Karan Singh was Head of the Indian State of Jammu & Kashmir from 1949. In 1967 he joined the Union Cabinet of India and held portfolios of Tourism & Civil Aviation, Health & Family Planning and Education & Culture. A Ph.D. from the Delhi University, he has held many important political and academic positions. He is Chairman of the Temple of Understanding, a global interfaith association, Chairman of the Auroville Foundation,President, Indian Council for Cultural Relations; and a Member of the Upper House of Indian Parliament. He has written and lectured on a broad spectrum of areas in India and abroad.
He is recognized as an outstanding thinker and environmentalist, educationist and philosopher. He is known around the world asa scholar of Hinduism and is the author of numerous books on the subject. While personally a devotee of Lord Shiva, he is an exponent of the teachings of Swami Vivekananda and Sri Aurobindo and his personal passion lies in the teachings of the Upanishads.
