Early Life

Eckhart Tolle was born Ulrich Tolle, in Germany in a town near Dortmund, to a matter-of-fact mother and an eccentric, head-in-the-clouds father; they fought, then divorced, and his father left the country for Spain.

At the age of 13, he abruptly refused to go to school - "I hated having to study things that were not compatible with my inner being" he said later.

His exasperated mother eventually sent him to live with his father in Spain. "My father said: 'Do you want to go to school here?' I said, of course, 'No.' Then he said: 'Well then, don't. Do what you like. Read.'" Tolle credits his unconventional upbringing with broadening his mind. "Spain at that time was very different than Germany, almost medieval. So I didn't get totally conditioned by one culture. If you live only in one culture for the first 20 years of your life, you become conditioned without knowing it. My conditioning got completely broken, so there was an opening to other world views.

He did not attend formal schooling after age 13, but rather took language and other courses. Later, he attended night colleges to obtain the necessary entrance requirements for studying in a university in England.

In his early 20s he moved to England to study there at the University of London.

Spiritual Transformation

In 1979, at the age of 29, he was a near-suicidal graduate student living in Belsize Park in London, England.

Tolle had just completed a degree in languages and history at the University of London, graduating with a first, yet he was anything but happy.

He said about that:

I'd done well because I was motivated by fear of not being good enough, so I worked very hard.

With no plans for his future, he grew more depressed until, as he puts it:

I couldn't live with myself any longer.

And then he describes being stopped dead by the implications of this sentence:

If I cannot live with myself, there must be two of me: the 'I' and the 'self' that 'I' cannot live with. Maybe, I thought, only one of them is real. I was so stunned by this realization that my mind stopped. I was conscious, but there were no more thoughts.

At that point he experienced a dramatic spiritual transformation and blanked out.

By the following morning, he was flooded with a sense of "uninterrupted deep peace and bliss" that has never left him since. That morning, he writes:

I walked around the city in utter amazement at the miracle of life on earth, as if I had just been born.

From this point, things were different: he no longer identified with the "voice in my head" that was doing the thinking. Instead, he could observe his thoughts, as if from a distance. He could see that they somehow weren't real: that the real him was the consciousness watching the thoughts, not the thoughts themselves. "There was a wonderful sense of peace," he recalled later. "Not a desensitised peace - you can experience that if you take enough drugs, or drink enough. But a peace that was joyful, and alive, and very alert."

After Transformation

The transformation marked the beginning of intense inward journey. Since he had no spiritual background and knowledge before the experience, he began to read and inquire in various spiritul scripts in order to understand his new state.

In parallel, soon after and despite the transformation, Tolle decided to continue his studies and embark on a doctorate in Latin American literature at Cambridge University. But it felt meaningless; he dropped out after a year. He spent the next two years in London, sleeping on friends' sofas, and spending the days on park benches in Russell Square, or sheltering in the British Library. When money ran out, he took a temporary job of doing office admin for the Kennel Club.

He said about that period:

Externally, one would have said 'this person is completely lost', My mother was very upset, because in her view, I had thrown everything away. And from a logical point of view, that looked quite correct.

Starting to teach & The Power of Now

At that point, his father helped him pay for a flat, and he began to run small group teaching sessions in friends' living-rooms. This marked the beginning of his function as a counselor and spiritual teacher.

But there were many more years to come of what looked, from the outside, like drifting - including a long period on the west coast of the United States, where he started to write The Power of Now. It was first published in 1997, with a print run of 3,000 copies.

The name change from Ulrich to Eckhart is a reference to the 13th-century German mystic Meister Eckhart. The name change was to mark his spiritual transformation.

Tolle now lives a simple life in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada with his partner since 2000, a Canadian woman named Kim Eng, who often teaches alongside him. They have no children.

He gives satsangs and lectures around the world.

Interviews, official website, books

The aim of Tolle's teachings is the transformation of individual and collective human consciousness--a global spiritual awakening.

Core teachings include:

You are not your thoughts. You are the awareness behind the thoughts. Thoughts are often negative and painful, yearning for or fearing something in the future, complaining about something in the present or fearing a matter from the past. However, the thoughts are not you; they are a construct of the ego. Awareness of your thoughts without being caught up in them is the first step to freedom.
Only the present moment exists. That is where life is (indeed it is the only place life can truly be found). Becoming aware of the 'now' has the added benefit that it will draw your attention away from your (negative) thoughts. Use mindfulness techniques to fully appreciate your surroundings and everything you are experiencing. Look and listen intently. Give full attention to the smallest details.
Accept the present moment. It is resistance to the present moment that creates most of the difficulties in your life. However, acceptance does not mean that you cannot take action to rectify the situation you are in. What is important is to drop resistance so that you let the moment be, and that any action arises from deeper awareness rather than from resistance. The vast majority of pain in a person's life comes from resistance to what is.
Observe the pain-body. Years of conditioned thought patterns, individually and collectively, have resulted in habitual emotional reactions with an apparent personality of their own. During 'pain-body attacks' we become completely identified with this 'pain identity' and respond from its agenda--which is to create more pain for ourselves and others. Observing the pain-body is awareness itself arising--as it allows humans to separate from this unconscious identification with pain.

Eckhart Tolle has no center or residence school. Rather, he is constantly on satsang and lectures tours around the globe and also gives workshops. Consult his official website for tours schedule.

At the core of the book is what the author calls “the state of presence,” a living in the “now” that is both intensely inspirational and practical. When the pressures of future and past thinking disappear, fear and frustration also vanish, conquered by the moment. Stillness Speaks takes the form of 200 individual entries, organized into 10 topic clusters that range from \"Beyond the Thinking Mind\" to \"Suffering and the End of Suffering.\" The entries are concise and complete in themselves, but, read together, take on a transformative power.

The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment

by Eckhart Tolle

It\'s no wonder that The Power of Now has sold over 2 million copies worldwide and has been translated into over 30 foreign languages. Much more than simple principles and platitudes, the book takes readers on an inspiring spiritual journey to find their true and deepest self and reach the ultimate in personal growth and spirituality: the discovery of truth and light.

In the first chapter, Tolle introduces readers to enlightenment and its natural enemy, the mind. He awakens readers to their role as a creator of pain and shows them how to have a pain-free identity by living fully in the present. The journey is thrilling, and along the way, the author shows how to connect to the indestructible essence of our Being, \"the eternal, ever-present One Life beyond the myriad forms of life that are subject to birth and death.\"

Featuring a new preface by the author, this paperback shows that only after regaining awareness of Being, liberated from Mind and intensely in the Now, is there Enlightenment.

Such a bulshit!

This is such a shallow basesless comment. Have you read at all this books?

First, the way Eckhart Tolle adapts, presents and mainly distills the essential wisdoms to beginner readers of the modern west without a compromise in essence is unprecedented.

The clear voice and selection of words that work deep inside is a work of a genius master.

Of course, there are no new "tricks" in his or in any other teachings. What new tricks are you expecting? what? is it a new type of reality show? a new edition of worlwide news? a new piece of art? Why there is a need for new tricks? Aren't there enough already? You are bored with the existing?

I personally arrived at the books of Eckhart Tolle when I had no need for them already but many lucky beginners had this enormous luck to have him shorten theoir curve of learning.

Hello mister, you have studied this book well; whether you prove on account of it Agnihotra is beneficial to breath in? If you have nothing idea of its proving then how you can say that this Agnihotra is the same as eating the fruits and building the splendid stone and brick structures; as having been said by you in your comments?

Clean Gurus

“A truly perfect teacher, noble and pure... ”

Self has absolutely no values or rules .. it can manifest itself as a Guru as ANYONE and anything, animal or object, art, even feces to Awaken the seeker.
This biggest BS in this guru business is that a guru has to be somehow “A truly perfect teacher, noble and pure...” AGAIN: Self has absolutely no values or rules so there is no reason a psychopath or pervert or assassin or even a sex-maniac cannot be a guru... or a dog or mountain, alias Arunachala...

.. look for goodness and purity in a guru
and all you will find is the money, evil and perversions
this goodness must hide.

.. ignore goodness and all sorts of Gurus can be found hidden behind all sorts of things, especially perversions and evil.

power of now

Tolle's book "The Power of Now": it is a lot of fragrant garbage that does little but cover the Now.

"The Power of Now" poetically chases the Now all over the place to entertain the masses,
with Oprah,
by exploiting the basics of spirituality, non-duality, Self, Now ... to make reality appear even more real than it could possibly be without the book.

Like Buddha and Osho.... Masts and probably lots of street-people,
Kundalini/Shakti took the mind of Tolle ... and in the process made reality unreal.

If Tolle has figured out over the years
why Kundalini, Now, Self,
makes reality unreal
then his book does everything to hide the answer.

Eckhart is the best

Just he surrendered to what is.. That's it.
He is a great teacher always want to change the level of consciousness of this world.
If the people in the world don't change their level of consciousness the world will soon become hell.
He surrendered to the marketing around him because in that way only his teachings reaches most of the people than other ways. Isn't it.
Because of the market only he become popular so that he can address more people around the world.

One thing I want to say is he is enlightened. So it's the matter of relation between the teacher and student.. not the student and the marketing management.

Know about him whether he is enlightened or not. Don't believe me.. Know yourself.

Marketing is the mouthpiece

The marketing is the delivery mechanism of the message. It is an ugly, but unavoidable truth of modern society that there is a machine by which an individual person may communicate with the masses. It is different (not better or worse, but simply different) than the old one-channel way - the publisher, the one-of-three-major-television-networks way, etc. We have to understand that the milieu where we find ourselves is always far from perfect. We have to deal with the situation in which we find ourselves (which is a big part of Eckhart's message in A New Earth-at least that which I have understood so far). We have to accept that environment in which we find ourselves at any given moment (with all its marketing types, Oprahs, etc.). If this is the megaphone through which the voice of Ultimate Truth must speak, then push the button and let's hear him or her. It's never going to be a misty mountain-top and all of us in tunics. What he has to say is important. The means available to him through which to say it are somewhat less than ideal; let's overlook that and judge what he says on its merits (which are substantial); Shira, your suspicions are both admirable and understandable. However, let us be careful to not mistake the method for the message.

What new ideas are you expecting? what? is it a new type of reality show? a new edition of worldwide news? a new piece of art? Why there is a need for new tricks? Aren't there enough already? You are already bored with the existing?

Eckhart and plagiarism

I have heard many of his talks and I have him mention many quotes and he has attributed them to the author. Please give a few examples where you say "they are plagiarised directly".

Besides a teacher IMHO, may make a point that someone else has made but give a twist to or give his own interpretation, since (again IMO) truth is one. The sport is the same, but coaches give their teams their own game plans to achieve a win. If the team doesn't like the coach, he is dumped for another. (Some coaches work better with some teams.) That's why we so many "teachers" in real life. For instance take any religion - Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism etc. (with each of the religions having different streams like Zen Buddhism - the religion is one but there are so many teachers.
