Biography

Veda Kovid and Yoga and Ayurveda Teacher, Durgadas (Rodney) Lingham is an Ayurvedic Astrologer, Yoga and Ayurveda Teacher, Ayurvedic Lifestyle Consultant, Ayurvedic Massage and Panchakarma Therapist as well as being Certified in Ayurvedic Pharmacy, Ayurvedic Massage and Beauty Therapies and also Clinical Ayurveda according to the Ashtavaidya Tradition of Kerala.

He has authored over thirteen books on Ayurveda, Yoga and Vedic sciences, including "Aushadh Rahasya", "Agni Rahasya" and "Exploring Mantric Ayurveda". He founded the Academy of Traditional Ayurveda, aiming at a traditional and integral view of Ayurvedic Medicine.

He has also been awarded the title of "Veda Kovid" by Pandit Vamadeva Shastri, as a Vedic Teacher, proficient in Vedic sciences such as Yoga, Tantra, Vedic Astrology and Ayurveda as well as the secrets hidden in the Riks, the sacred mantras of India's oldest text, the Rig Veda.

He follows the tradition of Jnana-Yoga (The Yoga of Knowledge), India's greatest tradition of Yoga through discrimination and Self-realisation, found in the Vedic Upanishad texts, and also the teachings of great Saints such as Shankaracharya, Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Narayana Guru and Sri Ramana Maharishi - the latter being the greatest Jnani of modern times! Durgadas also feels affinity with the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, and as such, much inspired by their Integral Yoga.

His Vedic Teacher, Vamadeva Shastri follows the inspiration of Sri Aurobindo, Sri Ramana Maharishi and the latter's great devotee, Sri Vasishtha Ganapati Muni, a great Vedic scholar. Durgadas sees Sri Ramana Maharishi as the source of his higher Atmika (Self) inspirations.

Having been brought up following Traditional Hinduism, he has lived an Ayurvedic and Yogic lifestyle all of his life. He has a background also in Sales, Marketing, Transport and Real Estate, as well as Yoga, Astrology and Ayurveda.

He has studied Ayurveda and related sciences with the American Institute of Vedic Studies with Dr. David Frawley, and also in India, attending classes with world-renown Dr. Sunil Joshi in Nagpur and also training at Greens Ayurvedic Hospital in Southern India, receiving hands-on Clinical training in Ayurveda in a real working Ayurvedic Hospital.

Here, he also studied under many traditional Vaidyas (Doctors), including the great authority of Ayurvedic Pharmacy - Vaidya Karuna, who had been studying and practising Keraliya Ayurvedic Pharmacy for over 50 years, continuing an age-old family tradition that is fast being lost in India today. Durgadas also introduces many of these formulas to the West, which are alsolargely unknown to many Ayurvedic Practitioners outside Kerala.

He is Certified in all aspects of Ayurveda, including Ayurvedic Psychology (as a Yoga and Ayurveda Teacher and Ayurvedic Astrologer); Ayurvedic Lifestyle Counselling; Clinical Ayurveda; Ayurvedic Pharmacy and Panchakarma, Massage and Beauty Therapies.

However, Durgadas has a deeper passion for the southern Keraliya Ayurveda, with it's more traditional Vedic approach interwoven in local traditions as Martial Arts dating back to Vedic times. It is this Keraliya system however he promotes.

As such, he brings a wealth of knowledge to New Zealand and the world, as also with his knowledge of Yoga, Tantra and Vedanta, coming also from an ancient Hindu lineage, stemming from Rajasthan in North-Western India on his maternal side and from a Tamil (south-eastern Indian) ancestry on his father's side.

The name "Lingham" itself means in the Sanskrit language a symbol of sign, and is the sacred emblem of the god Shiva, the Yogi-Deity and Divine Mystic in Hinduism.

Durgadas was brought up in the Arya Samaj spiritual tradition stemming from Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati in India which emphasises the ancient Vedic texts (Four Vedas, Rg, Saama, Atharv and Yajur) and also continues his maternal side which worshipped the Goddess (shakti) in the form of Gayatri-Saraswati, Mother of Vedas, Goddess of Wisdom and Music. He spent years of sadhana (spiritual practise) dedicated to this Goddess, and from which he received much inspiration about deeper translation of the Vedic texts, and deeper insights regarding Vedic sciences.

His Grandfather also studied Sanskrit in Dehradun in Northern India and his Mother (lateShobha Devi Lingham, nee Singh-Verma) was a great Sadhak (spiritual aspirant) of the Gayatri mantra sadhana or practise of Gayatri mantra and also had a passion for herbal remedies, having an Ayurvedic root. She also witnessed in her early years the power of Jyotish in her local village, healing her from a long-suffering illness, Asthma.
