Whole is always more than the sum of parts. So why pursue anything other than the Whole (Purna)?

Sense of Self is always Whole. It is thought that creates the illusion of lack.

Sorry but there cannot be a sense of self - if you can have any sense of it then, by definition and nature, it's not the self.

PS. and wholeness is a totally different thing anyway.

Independent

Wholeness is independent and so is sense of Self. So the characteristic that defines wholeness is that which does not require any addition or is not affected by it.
