i have been hearing and have read in scriptures about the sound which one hears when one is silent?it resembles the sound of chinnn...or something like fine buzzing sound?i want to confirm from all of you whether this sound has any spiritual significance?i know this is not tinnitus which is heard in diseased condition and which is somewhat painful to patients.on the contrary this sound brings a peaceful state.may be this is a normal physiological process.most of us would have listened this sound in our childhood when putting the fingers between the ears as play.

Listening for Om

Kundalini Tantra, by Swami Satyananda Saraswati. is an excellent book and on page 254, Practice 3: Perception of subtle inner sound, discusses this.

In this practice, you press on your tragus with your thumbs and fix your awareness on what your hear.

I think everyone has tinnitus to some degree, you hear this first, to me this is like a million crickets, a "high-frequency" sound.

After some time, you notice another more subtle sound, which the excellent book calls your "vehicle of awareness", to me this is like a stampede of horses or a diesel locomotive accelerating, a "low-frequency" rumbling sound.

After some time, you notice yet another even more subtle sound.
Picking the subtle sounds out of the background can be tricky because you're listening for Om, but the sound of chakras are there instead, lam, vam, ram, yam, etc.

You might be hearing Om right now but you just haven't identified it yet so you don't pay attention to it.

Body sounds

Sound engineers use anechoic rooms to make precise acoustic measurements. An anechoic room blocks outside sound from getting in and it's walls are covered with sound absorbing material, there are no echoes.

When working in an anechoic room, sound engineers will hear 2 sounds, a high pitched and a low pitched. The low pitched is the sound of blood flowing and the high pitch is the nervous system.

While doing inner-sound meditation, you will also hear these 2 sounds, and they shouldn't be mistaken for inner sounds. You might also hear your heart beating, especially with a full stomach.

Pranayama can reduce the strength (turn down the volume) of your hearing (physical senses) and make inner sounds easier to hear.

Inner sounds are what you hear beyond the high pitch and the low pitch sounds.

The listening of this sound through proper method can take you to subtle planes situated inside you, but the place of peaceful state (Necter) of this sound is more than much subtle inside you which needs a subtle/spiritual guide which can travel with you, inside you.
