Should one meditate during the night? It does feel eerie. Or is this the time when malighn spirits are roaming and therefore advised not to.

Leave the spirits to themselves

Leave the spirits to themselves and they will leave you for yourself. Around 4AM is the best timing for meditation, the collective mind around you is still dormant as most people are still asleep so no much mental disturbances from outside, your psyche is at the optimal state at that time - your subconscious is wide open, and your awareness is sharp.

You can't separate the spirits from you

They can be big in power over you only if you let them be that way, that's how it works, not in an independent way as the mind tends to think. The effect of metaphysical forces, whatever they are, always depends on you too.

See for more.

Best Time for Meditation

you can meditate at any time but the best time to meditate is 4am in the morning as this is the time when the positive energies are at their peak and at that time most of the saints, seers, yogis, etc do meditation so because of them there is a lot of positivity in the environment at that time.
