Dattaswami answers various questions from devotees

1) What is the aim of the birth of every soul?

A) A soul is the part of creation. Veda says that the world is created for the entertainment of God only. Therefore, every soul should realize that its existence and life are for the pleasure of God only and not for the pleasure of one’s own self or his family.

2) Can we take all the human beings to be born with some purpose?

A) As long as the human being thinks that the birth and the life is meant for the pleasure of one’s own self or its family, till then the life has no purpose. The reason is that as told above. The real aim of life is only to please the Lord. Therefore, the life of such human being which thinks that the ultimate aim is only to please the Lord alone has the purpose of birth.

3) What are the duties of the human being?

A) The only duty of human being is the service to Lord. But, for the service, the maintenance of the body and family is essential. Therefore, the duties related to such maintenance are also part and parcel of the main divine duty.

4) What is the reason for human incarnation?

A) The main purpose of the human incarnation is to clarify the doubts of the devotees in the spiritual knowledge. Apart from this, vision, touch, conversation and co-living are the four fortunes that are the available to the devotees. To punish evil forces and protect the devotees, His power is able to do it. Mainly the human incarnation is only to preach the spiritual knowledge. Therefore, the incarnations like fish, pig etc., are only forms of His power. Vamana, Parasurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha etc., are mainly for the preaching only.

5) How the family should behave to please the Lord?

A) If the entire family believes the human incarnation, it will be possible to worship the Lord in human form. Since in your question the pleasure of the God is mentioned, we can observe the pleasure for our service only in the human form the Lord. In worship of idols or in the worship of formless God there is no proof of the pleasure of God that can be noted by us. Therefore, in this answer I had to limit to the human incarnation only. At least you can serve the beggars and note happiness on their faces. You will get heaven for the service though for a temporary stay.

6) Does Pravrutti lead to God?

A) The duties to be performed for the maintenance of the body and family are Pravrutti. Therefore Pravrutti is the basis to reach God, but Pravrutti alone cannot lead you to God. For a drama the stage is necessary. If you prepare the stage only without the drama the spectators will throw stones. Therefore, Pravrutti along with Nivrutti only leads to God. Nivrutti means service to Lord.

Soul is produced from food

Soul is pure awareness, which is a special work form of energy produced by the oxidation of food. Its generation requires the function of several biological systems also like lungs, stomach, nervous system etc. When any one of these fail, the energy is not produced and awareness in general disappears as in the deep sleep in which the nervous system takes rest.

But the subtle body, which is a bundle of strong feelings (Samskaras), which are the waves of awareness, is not destroyed and it leaves the body for final enquiry. The enquiry is conducted by God based on these Samskaras only and not mere pure awareness, which is common in every soul. If you mean the subtle body for the soul, it is not destroyed. Even in the subtle body, pure awareness exists like gold in the jewels.

Only God is absolutely eternal not soul

The soul is eternal with respect to the body which is destroyed. This is only relative eternality with reference to the body. Except God, nothing is absolutely eternal and hence there is no exact simile to God in the world.

The eternality of the soul is only relative with respective to the body that is destroyed after some time (Hanyamaane…Gita). This relative eternality of soul is taken as a simile to absolute eternality of God, because there is no absolutely eternal item in the world that can be compared to God.

Only the available best among the relatively eternal items can be selected for comparison. In the beginning of Gita this subject of eternality of the soul with respect to the body is clearly explained, which gives the reason for selection of the soul as simile to God.

There is no Universe
There is no world.
There is no fire.
There is no Earth.
There is no water.
There is no air.
There is no you.
There is no me.
There is nothing.
But still there is SOMETHING,and the search/seeking of THAT SOMETHING is called Spirituality & after seeking one call it Soul,Divine Mother,GOD.
It is very easy to say that there is nothing without searching it.Denial is very easy, but search for THAT is very difficult. To search THAT NOTHINGNESS needs a true seeking, true disciple hood.
What one think that saying again and again without searching HIM,HE does not exist?
No it is not so,it is just the the mind play of one and mind has to do nothing with THAT.THAT is found only when mind, arguments, thoughts are dropped and the door of heart are opened.
One has to seek deep and deep without the ego of knowing HIM,by dropping all of intellectuality.
Seek HIM, HE will be found,Deny HE will be not.
HE is mystery,so HE has to seek,HE is not puzzle which can be solved,HE is not question which can be answered,HE is not philology which can be discussed/argued .
Seek HIM oh man seek HIM,without seeking you will not find HIM.
HE is THAT
& what is THAT,seek THAT/HIM.

“Waves of mind is knowledge, peace of mind is meditation,
Knowledge is collection of external experiences!!
Meditation means, moments of self realization!!

And mind will never find at all, and realization will not happen while mind dwells in it's own fantasies. Instead of glorifying your fantasies and pretending they come from the heart, challenge them and see if they are real.

If Oneness is the truth, can multiple souls be the Truth?

If the Source of your individuality is prior to thought, is it thinking? If it is not thinking, does it have purpose or reasons? Does it assign duties to you or personify itself as a Lord or God?

So many delusion, so many stories mind has told itself, and yet to question it threatens the precious delusion of self, so you fight this simplicity, and so we spin round and round with these silly stories.

True, the universe is ultimately an illusion that isn't happening 'out there' but rather 'in here', but the universe is not keeping you asleep. What keeps you asleep is your fantasies about Gods and souls and purpose and reason and duties, because it all swirls around an imaginary 'me'. 'My soul', 'My purpose', 'My duty', 'My Lord'. Get rid of the 'me' illusion and all of that vanishes. What remains is Truth.
