According to science our natural state is sleeping

We all think that being awake is our natural state and that sleeping is just a necessary appendix to the waking state.
But according to science our natural state is actually sleeping. Being awake necessitates a constant flow of a certain hormone called Orexins.
Orexins is produced and discharged by the hypothalamus.
Without this hormone we would all be asleep. Constantly.
This shocking revelation was discovered during a research for a cure for narcolepsy, a medical condition of excessive daytime sleepiness.
I think it may be the same case with spiritual awakening.
This time, there is a flow of an energy, an energy that causes one to awaken spiritually.
This time awakening is from the reality dream. It means being present, being here and now and not somewhere else in the thoughts.
When we wish to be conscious we discharge this energy and as a result we enter into presence. When the flow of that energy subsides we are withdrawn from the state of presence back into the reality dream.
I suspect this energy is accumulated in and discharged from the third eye chakra.

As opposed to the Matrix theory
In Matrix the natural state in which you are disconnected from the feeding-sleeping machine is the awakened state. This approach suggests the opposite. Interesting, I like this.
In the case of regular sleep, we are awaken for reasons of survival. We are awaken so that we could collect and consume food. I wonder what may be the reason for our spiritual awakening. Maybe the survival of a greater soul?
consciousness wishing to experience
In theory, the body could have collected food and defend itself without us being awaken from the sleep, using instinctive mechanisms.
I think therefore that the reason for the awakening from sleep is consciousness wishing to experience.
In the same way, a global consciousness wishing to experience subtle reality causes us to awaken spiritually.
Kundalini
According to sages and yoga scriptures the underlying energy is in the 3rd eye but in the Kundalini. It is the shakti energy that when releases through shaktipat or some other way causes the sadhaka to awaken.
Very interesting
Very interesting. It provokes a lot of reflections and questions about our perception of reality: how the dreaming fits into this finding? Is awareness and consciousness are overrated? How would have the world been without people waking up from sleep? (assuming of course that the three fundamental acts: having sex, eating, and defecating; would be possible in the sleep state)
In the same way, we can say that our natural state is death
In the same way, we can say that our natural state is death. Being alive necessitates certain activities in the body.
Originally, I was intending to write the above as a contra to the conclusion of the original post, assuming the premise that being alive is the natural state. But in a second thought, I think it says something about the real place of life in the body in this world in our soul. What is called "death" or rather being beyond the body may be the real natural state of us.
"natural state of us"
Hello Alon,
You said it!
Quote:
"What is called "death" or rather being beyond the body may be the real natural state of us."
Also, I'll add, sleeping is natural, where the physical-body, the energy-body, and the Soul, recharge in intervals. But over-sleeping is harmful.
On the other hand, Science says that sleeping 8+ hours is very healthy for a human body & mind. Whereas, all spiritual gurus contradict this and insist that a seeker should not sleep more than 5 hours at max, and not less than 2:45min; average is 3hrs sleep.
Our natural state is not of rest or sleep, but "energy in motion" - what rests, soon dies. Soul is ever-in-motion; and Life is nothing but a constant flow of energy/waves.

Awake, A Wake....as in Funeral, Dead, very Much so Un-awake
Awake, A Wake....as in Funeral, Dead, very Much so Un-awake ....LOLLLL
....while Life, it's 'relative real'.... is ~*~Nothing~*~ ...then Self's Cosmic Dream/Hallucination/Joke/FICTION ....does it appear, that we Need Science and Hormones to argue, "awake-ness"/ A - Wake = eg. A wake = (A-typical) Funerals and it's Dead/Death....Meaning, ONE/Self can 'eternally/infinitely/endlessly Dream, that it Awakes....yet Nevertheless, Self remains dreaming....hence, No-ONE ever A-wakes from Self's Dream ( because, their is NO-ONE, but Self)...NOT even Awake, while dreaming so.... NOT even a tinsey winsey bit;)

very good concept
I don't think so we are awake up and developed lots of innovations.how can anyone blame us that we are sleeping.humans are achieved lots of success and still in the progress. we are already wakeup.
