Nobody is born as a Yogi. Anybody can become a Yogi by Sadhana (practice).
SHEER KNOWLEDGE OF YOGA CANNOT MAKE ANYBODY A YOGI. BY KNOWLEDGE AND LEARNING ONE CAN BECOME AN INTELLECTUAL SCHOLAR AND WISE, BU NOT A YOGI. HE CAN POSE AS A SPIRITUALIST OR A PHILOSOPHER.
The grace of a Great Master is essential in Yoga line. The blessing of a Guru is enough to convert a blockhead into a genius. Yogi Vemana was a historical example for such a Phenomenon. With a second’s decision Ramana Maharshi could renounce every thing. Swami Vivekananda went into trance with the first touch of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. We can quote a number of such instances. INITIATION OF AN EXPERIENCED MASTER IS A MUST. Then only grace flows from the Master to Disciple. Then only the development of a Sadhaka will be marked.

The students of Raja Yoga should possess great desire and will. That sincere desire helps them. They can control their minds and divert their attention in proper direction.

Slowly it will control the thoughts. CONCENTRATION, CONTEMPLATION AND MEDITATION ARE THE THREE PHASES OF SADHANA. ONE WORKS IN BEFORE THE MIND, THE SECOND ONE IN BEHIND THE MIND, AND THE THIRD ONE IN BEYOND MIND. Just an inquiry does not help much. Acquisition of Knowledge does not give support in practice. COLLECTION OF MATERIAL BECOMES A CHILD’S PLAY. Persistent practice helps a lot, that leads a sadhaka to certain heights.

99% of Spiritual aspirants derive inspiration after learning and reading about great saints. They do start Yoga with some verbal Knowledge. IT IS NOT ENOUGH AND IT WILL NOT BE THE CORRECT APPROACH. One should follow some basic principles to keep a strong hold. ONE SHOULD NOT PRACTICE YOGA, AS HE LIKES. IT WOULD NOT YIELD ANY GOOD RESULT. MOREOVER IT MAY HARM. With a book on Asanas, you can start asana practice. No harm is done, because they are physical exercises. Yet, IF A MUSCLE OR A NERVE IS STUCK UP, WHAT CAN YOU DO? You can’t come back to normal. The pain may kill you. IN PRANAYAMA TOO, THERE IS POSSIBILITY OF BREATH BEING STUCK UP. There again danger awaits. So you need an expert or at least an experienced person to help you. Regarding the practice of Raja Yoga’s it is advised to know from an expert. Much might be said about independent practice, but very few people can develop independently.

For MEDITATION – 4 ASANAS ARE PREFERRED. They are -
- Siddhasana
- Padmasana
- Sukhasana and
- Savasana.

All cannot sit in Padmasana for a longer time. For the beginners Savasana does not suit.
There are two types of Pranayama. They are –
- Breathe In and Breathe Out ---in a systematic way.
- The other is projecting out thought and deeply observing breathe in the Inner. It is called Prana Kriya.
This is preferable because anybody can practice it silently. One should close the eyes, sit erect and practice very slowly. After some time, you can slip into meditation beautifully. Sitting erect keeps the spine exact. It helps the mind to work faster and slowly to cool down. We can derive peace of mind, thus. Deep observation of thought gradually leads to thoughtless state and make our mind shut its doors to worldliness. Control over senses is thus feasible.
