When there is a strong pain or pleasure, the Self is getting identified with the mind and body.

The widespread belief is that it is doing so out of desire or fear.

But the Self has no desires nor fears.

It is actually getting identified out of compassion.

The Self is rushing to assist the mind, it is rushing to guard the body.

And the only way it can do that is through identification, the same way a hand needs to enter a glove puppet in order to operate it.
