Why is Conscience covered?

What sets us apart from animals is "our open-ended ability to imagine and reflect on different situations, and our deep-seated drive to link our scenario-building minds together."

Yet it is this power of imagination (kundalini) that has been one of the factors detrimental to our freedom and a clear 'Conscience'. In Gita it is said Chapter 3.38

As fire is enveloped by smoke, as a mirror by dust, as an embryo by the womb, so this (wisdom) is enveloped by that (desire or anger) .

Swami Shivananda, Divine Life Society, Rishikesh has written a wonderful article on Conscience
http://www.hinduism.co.za/conscien.htm . I wish to propose that Conscience.is covered up in three ways in line with wisdom. Conscience is to heart what wisdom is to faculty of cognition.

Children must have this faculty called conscience but it gets covered up but not totally hidden in the same way as clouds cover the Sun but do not fully obstruct the light. Conscience gets covered up in children firstly because of escape due to helplessness which later on takes a form of habit and is called laziness or inertia to change (face challenges).

The second is our desire to seek pleasure and avoid pain which may well be a biological need for survival.

Third way in which Conscience is covered up is by denial. Its effect is similar to what is achieved by inertia which is to avoid change in status quo but arrived at in a more ingenious way to make it difficult to detect. The technique may range from pretending not to notice (dumbing down) to avoidance through rationalisation and much in between. Ideas and concepts are often held as shields to protect ones fortress of self identity (supposedly).

The only remedy is to be totally honest with oneself and prepare for a long drawn out battle.
