where does religion lead us?

I live in Ireland, a country in which most people claim to be Christian, either Catholic or Protestant. Despite this my country has been affected by at least 1000 years of continuous violence and many divides are drawn along religious lines. Similar things can be said about a lot of nations/peoples all over the world.

Where is organised religion taking us? Should it be taking us anywhere? If it doesn't lead to a true peace, has it ultimately failed despite the good that comes of it? Afterall, it has had a substantial amount of time to bring about change yet humans still fight, kill, hurt, destroy, invade, conquer. We have not learned the lessons that religion purports to teach.

Has it failed us, have we failed it, or both, or neither? Has organised religion run its course? What is the alternative?

Well put!

Couldn't say it better - the crusades, the Jihad, India and Pakistan, Middle East, Jerusalem, The inquisition, and so on.

It reminded me the discussion in http://www.gurusfeet.com/forum/why-almost-all-wars-originate-religions
