Meditation or Premeditation?

Do you have any idea of how your meditation is going to be before actually entering into meditation?

Do you have a plan for your meditation? a scheme? a layout?

Do you set goals for your meditation? expectations? Is your meditation said to yield certain benefits?

Do you confine it in time?

Does your meditation has a name? Is it considered part of a well-crafted spiritual method or system?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes then, unfortunately, what you are trying to do is not meditation but premeditation. It is close, it is similar, it may have a great value but yet it is not the thing itself and it cannot yield the great qualities of meditation.

You are like a robot who is trying to meditate - Can a robot really meditate?

Meditation is the means and the goal. The nature of meditation can not be understood by the mind nor can be depicted in words.

You cannot have meditation and in the same time expect mind-formed benefits out of it.

You cannot plan a meditation. It plans itself.

The only thing you can do about meditation is to let it happen, to allow yourself to be carried out by it, to undo. And then the rest will come.

This is the very uniqueness of meditation. This is its magic. It is not you who plans or does the meditation. It is the meditation that plans and does itself. It is the meditation that unfolds.

And it unfolds, by its very nature, when you don't have any expectations, any plans, any goals. Premeditation is the sure way to spoil the meditation. Let your premeditation go.

The meditating robot says it all.

Sometimes one picture can say it all. Brilliant post, shira, thank you! Meditation is prone to so many pitfalls and misunderstandings, especially when is used in western new age to achieve something.

Countless theories and practices on this spiritual fashion of meditation are available all over the globe.
Premeditation stage is tried to be revealed to differentiate it from meditation while the nature of meditation is spoken as very unique and itself unfolding. Viewing it there may be post meditation, referring to YOGA APHORISM, WHICH IS CALLED SAMAADHI. it is thoughtful concentration at the beginning and later on it is thoughtless awareness (NIRVICHAAR SAMAADHI).
