Karma points

My personal thought is that Karma points should be removed. I personally don't see the positive side of it. Removing them may get rid of random posts or copy and paste posts that we commonly find. Since there would be no external gain for posting, people may post less and when they do the posts may be of worth. Just my thought. what do you think?

I like to see...

I like to see who's posting mainly for points, as it shows me whose posts to stay away from ;-).

Seems good either way here, actually. If people really get an ego kick from racking them up, what's the harm done? :-p.

Well, Michael's point was that if somebody has a karma point motivation, the quality of the posts may suffer, and it's possible they do, which you implied as well, so maybe there is a 'harm done'. I had to check again to see what the significance is of the points:

"What do Karma Points serve for?
First and foremost, Karma Points serve by themselves as a distinguished hallmark for the prominency of community members."

"Top Karma Points gainers are honored in the "Most Active" block and are the center of the Karma celebration. Top Karma Points gainers also win special prizes and benefits from time to time. Benefits include promotion to the role of Guardian Angel that entitles privileges such as moderation in the Online Universal Temple and in forums and more."

I don't really know what any of that means, but I guess the idea is to encourage community participation, which seems a little odd while actively discouraging 'too much' participation.

The way I figure it, people should be movitated to post because they have an opinion they want people to hear among other things.
