If I Am Free

Q: If I am free, why am I in a body?

M: You are not in the body, the body is in you! The mind is in you. They happen to you. They are there because you find them interesting. Your very nature has the infinite capacity to enjoy. It is full of zest and affection. It sheds its radiance on all that comes within its focus of awareness and nothing is excluded. It does not know evil nor ugliness, it hopes, it trusts, it loves. You people do not know how much you miss by not knowing your own true self. You are neither the body nor the mind, neither the fuel nor the fire. They appear and disappear according to their own laws.

That which you are, your true self, you love it, and whatever you do, you do for your own happiness. To find it, to know it, to cherish it is your basic urge. Since time immemorial you loved yourself, but never wisely. Use your body and mind wisely in the service of the self, that is all. Be true to your own self, love your self absolutely. Do not pretend that you love others as yourself. Unless you have realized them as one with yourself, you cannot love them. Don’t pretend to be what you are not, don’t refuse to be what you are. Your love of others is the result of self-knowledge, not its cause. Without self-realization, no virtue is genuine. Where you know beyond all doubting that the same life flows through all that is and you are that life, you will love all naturally and spontaneously. When you realize the depth and fullness of your love of yourself, you know that every living being and the entire universe are included in your affection. But when you look at anything as separate from you, you cannot love it for you are afraid of it. Alienation causes fear and fear deepens alienation. It is a vicious circle. Only self-realization can break it. Go for it resolutely.

Big Questions

Hi Bonya,

Big Questions..Anybody have a 10 foot pole?

Words from teachers and the Realized, such as the words quoted above from Nisargadatta, can only point to the answer you seek. One common theme among them is the need for the development of self investigation, which is turning one's focus into and/or onto one's self. To realize what is true, all that is false must be seen and cast off. What can be known of our true selves if we cannot see what we are not? Nisargadatta expounds on focusing on the "I Am" feeling. Maharshi brought the focus to the "I Am" feeling by telling others to question it by asking "Who am I". Ultimately, the seeker's earnestness and desire for truth, however tested and broken it may be or not, amplifies the magnetic pull inward towards the realization of Self.

As far as one's duties they feel for the world, religion, god, family, career, environment, etc..Who else can decide that for you but you? The answer usually given to this question is to use whatever leisure time you can spare for this self investigation and intimacy with self. ENJOY IT when you can.

If you like the excerpt from the post above, it can be found in the book "I Am That", p.213, by Nisargadatta Maharaj which is available on this site to read or download at the bottom of this link...

Glad you liked his words and hope this helps with your questions. :)

Default Programming

One of the random quotes from Gurusfeet:

"Self-realization is nothing more and nothing less than:
NOT being deceived by the senses."

Once we realize that by default God has programmed our senses to a lower dimension, and our job is to re-tune to the original higher frequency, fine tune them. When we sleep, we are free of this body, this is also automatically programmed not per our will. We have to deliberately activate and program ourselves to the spiritual life, beyond body.

Well said

Hi Azeemi,

I like your posts and well said this time too. The first step indeed is to consider as dust the pleasure in this world and the next (heavens). Seems scary but alas so true that no one can truly claim to serve God & mammon both.

Of course one must seek grace, but isn't it true that he is compassionate to those that seek a change of mind (repent).

One True God and the wannabes.....

If the Sun can spread its rays and light over every single particle of this earth, be it mud or man, and that too without discrimanation; then, God is the most Compassionate and the most Merciful.

God, the One & Only True God, is the King of Kings, the Creator, Cherisher, Sustainer the Lord of The Universe. the likes of satan, demon, mammon or devil...are nothing but creatures and servants like us, who are mere "Wannabes", just like men in the past have self-proclaimed god-hood. God has never asked us to fear them, but beware of their traps.

The satan's presence in the scheme of things and specifically our spiritual growth and journey towards God is very crucial. People dont succeed if there's no opposition.

Scheme of things

What a blessing it is to be given an opposition that can wholly destroy us..Give it any name you like. When we lay powerless and defeated broken and empty, may the real work begin in a world untainted by nothing but God.

dead or wounded?

Once, a master took his servant along for a duck-shooting trip. As the master emtpied his rifle shooting down many ducks, he ordered his servant to bring him the fallen ducks. The servant swiftly went and started picking up the dead ducks. On seeing this, the master shouted at the servant and said to leave the dead ones and pick them later. He asked the servant to catch hold of the ducks that were wounded but not dead, and were trying to fly off again. The dead ones wont go anywhere.

Likewise my bro, the satan doesnt bother with the dead ones amongst us, the dead in conscience, but pursues those that were his victims once, yet, are trying to reconnect with GOD.

How truly said. The wall doesn't feel sad but humans do and it remains a wall but we have chance of spiritual growth. The feeling of pangs of conscience or discontent is therefore considered a sign of awakening. Only one must not seek contentment but use the energy for search.

Who reigns?

Nice parable Azeemi. In your world, Satan being with man to delude and lead astray, where is Satan not?

If Satan is not..where God is..where are you? Are you not man and therefore with Satan?

If God is..where you are..what authority can Satan impose upon you?

This is how we are unwittingly tricked into declaring allegiances so that worlds of Godlessness may reign.

Guard yourself as you must and keep your sword sharp. No need to let Satan enter where God is, but in the end, we only take the sword upon ourselves.

By some Grace..only God Is..in my world.

Of course God Reigns..!

You are absolutely right B-friend. Even my conviction is that Only GOD is Omnipresent, Omniscient and Omnipotent.

The satan has been granted powers but limited; this idiot is not everywhere and cannot do everything. Those who busy themselves with GOD rarely know of satan's presence or even existence. Even satan believes in one GOD, but only has issues with us humans. He was enjoying his reign until God decided to create the best of the creatures in human beings/man. This pissed him off and he decided to lead a life of hatred, conspiracy and revolt against us.

In this world we plot, connive and conspire, and the satan does that too, but God has the best plans. Only GOD Reigns!

In your togetherness with only GOD, do pray to HIM for us poor souls too.

Hi Azeemi,

Not to sound contrarian, which I tend to do, or engage in a battle of wits by using your words against you, but...

"Those who busy themselves with GOD rarely know of satan's presence or even existence."

With myself, I have found the opposite to be true.

Satan & Maya

Hi B-friend,

As I understand concept of Satan is the same as Maya of Hindus or Mara of Buddhists. I have already written about Maya earlier so won't repeat it here. The creation according to Gnostics is a play of light and darkness. As you would appreciate unless light is obstructed it won't be visible and one cannot see a thing that is totally devoid of light. So the mixture of these two is creation. The most high Absolute is some thing about which one can say nothing nor compare it with anything. So there is no question of light and darkness in it.

Now probably this division into two which are mirror images of each other is the first activity of creation. Thereafter our world is created the sevenfold way where the highest angel gives the push to the world of first order only and the others proceed through a law.

Now the evolution from darkness to light of man ( from the lowest haven) is obstructed by something which is known only by result and whose nature cannot be described save in psychological terms as Mara (the tempter) or Satan.

We find that even Jesus was tempted thrice , once when the Satan asked him to make bread of stones, second when asked to be the King (power) and the third to jump thus test God. So even at a high stage of development he was subject to the influence of Satan though he conquered it at all times and therefore except during the end just before He was crucified when he prayed to the Lord to remove the cup of suffering but soon added if it was His will showed the he looked up to the Lord alone.

So the psychological truth of Satan cannot be denied which philosophically is similar to Maya.

Well spoken

Very well spoken Joejoe. I like the phrase "psychological truth of Satan".

What other truths could there be when all procedes forth from the mind? These psychological plays that are acted out in the world of man, of what substance are they? These inner dramas manifest our perceptions of the outer. One by one these inner dramas are learned and emulated by others through association, perpetuating a cycle of learned experience..of learned suffering..of learned ignorance. Every culture has their own way of narrating these inner dramas. Some quite well known as our religions will attest. These verbal narratives are nothing more than a script for the mind to cling to. Loose yourself from the script and an authentic story will finally unfold. You are no less unworthy of your own story than Buddha..Than Christ...Than Muhammad...Than Rama..Krishna..or Arjuna..Than any Saint any Sage or any other.

The commonality of overcoming Satan, Maya, or Mara is the overcoming of illusion. What is illusion but something that never existed in the first place. The question then becomes what gave name and form to the manifestation of the illusions that made them so believable? It all reverts back to the mind and it's capabilities. Then, once the mind is grasped, the question becomes what gave name and form to the mind. So now we are lead to the "I am" feeling..What is said to be the only verifiable truth common to all. No one can deny the sense of "I". Where does this sense of I come from? You can call this investigation the philosophy advaita but it is only the investigation of an honest person who seeks Truth. All sorts of honest people found themselves on this investigation..it was no philosophy to them. It was their life-line.

Good to speak with you again..Take care

The Golden Balance

To understand truth is difficult and to bring it down to the level of physical reality is a life long work. To consider only that as Real or only this as Real is to be lead away by Satan.

The art is of maintaining the Golden Balance.
