'APPO DEEPO BHAVA' -- 'Be a light unto yourself.' Buddha

You must understand it, go into it, examine it, give your heart and your mind, with everything that you have, to find out a way of living differently. That depends on you, and not on someone else, because in this there is no teacher, no pupil; there is no leader; there is no guru; there is no Master, no Saviour. You yourself are the teacher and the pupil; you are the Master; you are the guru; you are the leader; you are everything.
-Talks by Krishnamurti in U.S.A 1966 p.73

What does “be a light unto yourself” really mean? Does it mean that a person should be an independent thinker? "I follow what my heart tells me", we here these words often and admire persons who say or do this but is following self-impulse the right thing. Spontaneity is a good thing but yet if someone takes out a gun and on impulse and shoots the other would such a thing be good.

"The unexamined life is not worth living", is attributed to Socrates and is very apt but here too the question remains what is meant by examination? The probable answer is that we must question or enquire but before one begins questioning one must Listen. He must listen to his own life and to sources that he considers worthy. This open passivity would give him authentic data to begin to enquire and ask the right questions. Hence, it is important to lay a good foundation.

Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: (Luke 6:47)

He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. (Luke 6:48)
