What is and what is not a soul mate?

how can our mortal minds even comprehend what real love is? are we part & parcels of the unending whole recognizing the divine within each other? are we spirits karmically bound for eternity? because both of those sound nice to me. and what about those with whom we clash? do we have a karmic dance to play out together, no matter how unpleasant?

love and hate are from same origin
I think that when we feel intense emotion towards someone - intense love or intense hate - it is the opposite polarities of the same mental karmic connection, mental connection we carry from previous lives maybe which calls for a resolution.
Are you familiar with this strange phenomenon that you get to know someone and instantly you find yourself despising him so grievously? And you haven't met him before, he didn't do you any harm, he reminds you no one else.
Therefore it is essential not to react to such intense emotions, to accept them from a point of understanding and to process them in real time by observing them in the presence of this someone. They carry a lot of valuables from far away.
People mistake romantic love and true love
Though once in 1,000 years it is said that there is case of a romantic love that is also a true love... :-)
True love indeed is something we can mostly imagine and hope for...
Romantic love is usually a hidden obsession, a temporary narcsistic, sometimes selfish, state of mind, a cure for our feeling of not complete, a remedy for our feeling of insecurity in this world, an efficient arrangament to have free sex (for men) and free offsprings (for women).
True love is a totally different thing.
The above does not mean we should not enjoy romantic love. It just means that we should not idealize it to what it is not which results in blocking ourselves from reaching true love ("hey, i know what true love is, i have it with my grlfriend... i do not need to work on it..."
