"Tactical" VS. "Strategical" Awareness

If you want to ease your pain, watch your emotions. If you want to eliminate your pain, watch your thoughts.
The reason for that is that we are identified primarily with our thoughts, with the thinker. As long as we do not observe the thinker, thoughts will keep on coming "from behind the observer", this is the trickiness of the mind, it will always find a loophole to infiltrate in. These thoughts are the reason for our pains, they call emotions in response and those inflict the pain.
So, having the pain manifested as emotions, you can clearly ease it by observing the emotions but bare in mind, though very helpful, productive and most advisable, this is only a tactical aproach - other kinds of pain will keep on pouring as you didn't handle the source, the trigger of the pain: the thoughts.
Once you are ready, try to watch also the thinker and thoughts will subside. Then you will embark on the strategic path of eliminating the source of pain: the wild stream of uncontrolled thoughts enabled by unconscious identification with the thinker.
