Before leaving home make sure all doors and windows are closed

Each time you leave home, check the 2 doors and 5 windows of the house to make sure they are well closed:

  • The window of Thoughts (the constant stream of thoughts, the thinker).
  • The window of Feelings (the constant reactions of feelings and emotions).
  • The window of Body Sensations (the reactive sensations in different body parts as in Vipassana).
  • The window of Identification with the Body (your tacit conditioned belief that you are the body).
  • The window of "I"-Thoughts (the observer of all this, the controller, the sense and feeling of "I", the thoughts that represent your personality and image as an object, your self image as in Ramana Maharshi's Self Enquiry).

And also:

  • The door of Disbelief (that obscures your trust, your connectedness with the absolute, your awareness that there is something beyond).
  • The door of Inner Body (the astral energetic body that can be clearly sensed as in Eckhart Tolle's Inner Body awareness).

You go in and out from the house of awareness, rarely being present there. Therefore, remember to observe these 2 doors and 5 windows periodically, do not leave them hidden from your awareness for longer periods.

The mind is a very sneaky and diligent burglar. Over and over again, it will check each and every door and window of the house of your consciousness when you are not present there and upon finding any of them open will sneak in and act as the lord of the house until you are back, if you are back, and not too late.

If you only manage to observe only these 2 doors and 5 windows, nothing else.

Total Awareness

Thank you shira. Can't think of some other window, maybe the mentioning of the ego regarding the window of the I-Thought.

You observe the thoughts and the mind sneaks in through the emotions and influence your conduct. You watch the emotions and it sneaks through the image of "I", the ego.

Sometimes it looks like a hopeless battle.

CSI FBI T

It really does the work.

I found out that is important to do it not only in formal meditation but ceaselessly during the day, when you are in office, when you are waiting for the bus, before going to sleep and when waking up and so on.

For this purpose, I made for myself an acronym that helps remembering the 7 items wherever I am. I am sharing it here, it is "CSI FBI T" (names of surveillance agencies because that is whst we actually do in this):

C = Connectedness / Disbelief
S = Sensations
I = Inner Body

F = Feelings
B = Body identification
I = I thought

T = Thoughts

Gurdjieff

Gurdjieff used to put a lot of emphasis on this totality of awareness - to be aware in the same time of all 7 centers as he termed them which are:

* Higher Intellectual center
* Higher Emotional center
* Intellectual center
* Emotional center
* Moving center (responsible for voluntary movement)
* Instinctive center (controlling involuntary processes of the body and the senses)
* Sex center

He also said that if awareness is not total then the robotness of us will continue to govern.

Vipassana

I realized this the hard way a few years ago during Goenka's Vipassana 10-day retreat.

Goenka says that body sensations map everything but observing the body sensations I felt that the mind is still controlling my automatic reactions in some misterious way. I later found out that unfortunately it is not enough to observe body sensations but I should also observe the thoughts and later on found out that I should observe the "I Thought", the one who observes the body sensations and the thoughts. Then I felt very strongly that "the house is sealed".

2 suggestions

A great read. Thanks for sharing.

2 suggestions:

Vary the order of observation. Do not always follow the same sequence otherwise the controlling mind will adjust and spoil the effectiveness.

From time to time during the procedure, observe the one who observes, the controlling mind, the one that says things such as "now let's move to the next window" etc.

wonderful reading

When I go through your writing ,I cannot restrain myself to praise your marvelous and splendid thinking which is the blend of typical philosophical theories which are leading from all sides and from all places to the one peaky spot (PLACE) WHICH IS WELL DESIGNATED NI SCRIPTURES AS--------NON DUALISM.Truly, I feel that you are genuine follower of MONISM,non-dualism.You have included in your thinking aspect of vipashana which charms me most hence I now feel to read all your blogs ,writings.
JUST AS VIPASHANA TO ME,SO JUST SAHAJ YOGA (SIMPLIFIED KUNDALINI YOGA) ALSO TO ME FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF ACTUAL EXPERIENCE,THEREFORE,I AM EXPLORING IN YOUR READING ACTUALLY FELT STUFF BUT STILL I HAVE NOT FOUND OUT.
SAHAJ YOGA GIVES US THE KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE OF OUR SOUL (SUBJECT) IN PRACTICAL AND THAT IS THE EXPERIENCE OF NON-DUALISM ---PATH GOING THROUGH DUALISM-----LEADS TO THOUGHTLESS AWARENESS-----HEREBY,MY PURPOSE TO MENTION SAHAJ YOGA IS TO SUBMIT YOU A METHOD/PATH WHICH IS THE PEAK OF HARMONY OF ALL TRUE THOUGHTS,PHILOSOPHIES,RELIGIONS-IN-ALL AND NON-DUALISM EXPERIENCE IN PRACTICAL.

Remarkable recipe

I would like to join your words - this is a remarkable post, a remarkable recipe. I wouldn't change a word or an item in the 5+2 windows and doors. It is very rare that I feel so about something I read.

Great post

Regrading the 2 doors:

I wouldn't put such emphasis on the inner body. I once thought it was cardinal following the reading of "The Power of Now" and practiced it extensively but I'm not sure anymore that it has such a special value.

Regarding "disbelief" - I agree 100%. I think this issue is underestimated or even overlooked. Our skeptic conditioning undermines quietly all our spiritual efforts. We gain some connection with the beyond, we gain some considerable trust, and then the skeptic programming in us does it job and rewinds our temporal belief. This is indeed THE door to guard.

In time?

Interesting exercise. Has anyone tried? Have you managed to get to the end of the list without the mind creeping in again?

:)

In the meanwhile, don't forget to breathe...

spritual world,

There is also 8th door, on the centre of both eyes on our four head, but the door opens backwards, from which we can sence our 6th sence, we can also see and go out from that door and see the spritual world,
The main aim of doing all these Meditations is to reach that door.

Another giant door

I think there is another giant door to add to that list: control. Control is the very essence of the mind, another mechanism which is overused based on ignorance (the belief that one can really control that which happens to him.

The difficult part is to be able to identify this control force as an object and to observe it. The best approximation for that is to observe the area of the head and see what follows.
