How to destroy the ego?

It is a common question I hear, but you can not battle the ego. It is the ego (me) that would be fitting the ego.

The "myself", the "I", and the "me" are all ego. As such there is nothing "I" can do to rid "myself" of the ego (which is "I" and "myself"). It is a futile battle that will never end.

Stop fighting the ego...cease all effort. Inquire into who/what you are. Who are you? What are you? If you realize you are not thoughts - which creates the mind (and which includes the ego)...then you see the ego for the mirage it is and it is no longer a problem.

Of course, "you" can't do this in order to get rid of the "ego" - for that reinforces the ego. Inquire into who/what you are - but expect no results...have no purpose in it.

Beautiful

Indeed, effort which is so admired by humanity, in the spiritual path might pose a hindrance, especially beyond the first steps.

Effort, fighting, achievements, expectations - important tools of the mirage ego in maintaining its illusionary image.

Thanks Eric for puting this in such clear words and directing to the one that observes all this!

EGO CANNOT BE DESROYED

Santthosh
HI ERIC,
THE EGO CANNOT BE DESTROYED. THE EGO IS PART AND PARCEL OF THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE. THE EGO IS THE TOOL YOU ARE USING IN THE SPIRITUAL QUEST.

WITHOUT THE EGO A PERSON AND HIS EXPERIENCE OF THE WORLD CEASE TO EXIST. EGO IS PHYSICAL IDENTITY. BUT PEOPLE MISTAKE THE PRIDE TO EGO.

IT IS NO USE OF DESTROYING THE EGO. WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING WHAT IS MIND, THE EXPERIENCE OF DUALITY WILL REMAIN AS REALITY.INQUIRE INTO THE NATURE OF THE MIND OR HUMAN EXPERIENCE, THEN YOU WILL REALIZE IT IS NO USE OF FIGHTING WITH EGO IN ORDER TO GET WISDOM.
WITH RESPECT AND REGARDS
SANTTTHOSH

Ego

I think the best way to destroy ego is just to awaken your inner self.

If ego is illusion, the truth will kill it.

Ego is the false notion that there is somebody here who can or needs to do something, which is delusion in itself. Based on this delusion, you then want to destroy the delusion that wants to destroy something. Since it's all delusion all the time, it just plays out in it's own delusional way and has nothing to do with anything real.

There is a presence, and it's intelligent, and it's expressing in the form of thoughts, most of which are total nonsense, but this isn't hidden from the presence that you are, it just needs to be looked at honestly without any agenda.

Figure out what the truth of the matter is even if it kills you. Yeah, it might.

Phantom phantom but still it dominates you completely

Sorry for destroying the nice consensus here but I think that there are fundamental flaws of generalization in the post and the comments due to mismatch of terms which is typical to spiritual people.

Ego is not "I". I know that there are a few teachers that use the two terms interchangeably but this is redundant and does not reflect the true mental notion we give these terms when we say them and this is what counts at the end of the day.

"I" is the sense of an integrated monolithic independent entity one has. Ego is the mechanism that protects and supports this mental sense of identity. Both are phantoms in absolute terms (as well as any other form) but are more than real in relative terms - terms in which we live in. And so dismissing the ego and the "I" based on the fact that in absolute terms they do not exist is ignorant, it leads to nothing except self deception and the continuation of their dominance. Exist or not, they dominant you so I would say that they exist big time.

You can destroy both of them and everybody wishes to destroy them so enough with the spiritually-correct piousness. The "I" can be destroyed by observing it, the ego can be destroyed by fighting it. Do not be afraid to fight. There are indeed certain cases where the object you want to destroy is too strong and too integrated in you that fighting it will strengthen it but in most cases when the object is weak enough - fight it with no excuses and guilt - the sweeping fear of spiritual people to fight is a mental projection of their fear of conflicts in daily life.

The above mistakes stem from our great urge to form decisive sweeping conclusions. Don't be mistaken: this urge does not come from our desire for truth but simply from our desire for certainty. Be careful if you truly want to remain sincere with yourself.

"If YOU"

"If YOU", Must be knowing the answer to this Question?
Than what is the value of LIVING GURU OR MASTER,
"HOW TO DESTROY THE EGO"
Yes This Question Has The Answer,
Including You, This is The Last Question of every "SOUL",
But This Question Needs To arrise from the "SOUL",
This is not the Task of BODY or MIND,
This Question arrises from the "SOUL" WHEN each and every question of this world ENDS,
Every "SOUL" is not Thirsty for This Question,
The Question Needs TRUE THIRSTNESS,
Don't Worry!

Don't destroy the Ego

This is my understanding: Don't try to destroy the Ego. It, like everything else, has been given as a gift from existence (god, truth substitute the word that you use.) If you have ever truly been without it for a second, you know that there is no differentiation, so how can you function in the world? Really and truly, you don't know up from down without an ego to advise you.

The individual ego is a seeing-eye-dog. The owner decides where to go, the dog advises when to move forward and when to stop. Look beyond it to truth to decide where to go.

Yes, this is true. You can use silence to move through. In fact, I have found that silence is th only way through terror.
